The senator said their discussion regarding the need for further aid was productive.
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina traveled to Kyiv on Monday to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where the two discussed the status of financial aid for the war-torn country.
The U.S. Congress remains in a stalemate on the $95 billion defense and foreign aid bill, which includes further financial aid for Ukraine’s defense against Russia. Legislators, including Senator Graham, who voted against the bill, cited ongoing concerns with federal overspending.
Despite this decision, Senator Graham has voiced continued support for Ukraine. President Zelensky thanked the senator for his support, emphasizing the importance of U.S. financial aid in Ukraine’s defense over the last two years. After the meeting, Senator Graham said that his visit with the Ukrainian president was “productive.”
“If you want aid to Ukraine, you better start talking to the American taxpayer. You better start talking to them about what’s going on. Thirty-four trillion (dollars) in debt,” Senator Graham said after the meeting. “Can we provide a loan that’s waivable with no interest? Yes. Can Ukraine absorb that? Yes. I think President Zelenskiy would welcome the weapons in any fashion we could get the weapons to him.”
